SiteGround Russia Hosting Review & Using SiteGround in Russia

At first, let’s talk about the Data Centers of SiteGround.

SiteGround Data Centers:

The effect of the Data Centers on your website:

Data centers can affect the performance of a website in many ways. Primarily the location and the infrastructure of the data centers have the biggest impact on the websites. Here’s how…

The effect of the location of the Data Centers:

In a nutshell, it is better if you choose a data center to host your site which is closer to the majority of the visitors of your site. When the distance between the data center and the visitor increases, the loading speed of the website decreases.

It’s because the data needs to travel a larger distance to reach the visitors. So, you should always try to host your website on a web hosting company which has data centers closer to most of your visitors.

As this article is particularly written for the readers of Russia, so you should choose a data center as close as possible to your country.

The effect of the quality of the Data Centers:

The data centers are consist of computers. Now, as the technology is advancing day by day. The computers in the data centers should also be upgraded to the new standards.

But, it is unfortunate that most of the web hosting providers still use old hardware on their data centers. They do it to maximize their profit and to minimize the cost.

Needless to say that this practice is very bad for the customers. So, you should go with a web host provider which is equipped with all the modern technology in their data centers.

Location of the Data Centers of SiteGround:

SiteGround has 4 data centers in total. The data centers are located in London (United Kingdom), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Chicago (US), and Singapore (SG) respectively. That means they have data centers in 3 continents.

Fortunately, the two data centers situated in Europe is the best option for our Russian readers. SiteGround recommends London (United Kingdom) and Amsterdam (Netherlands) data centers for the users from Russia. So, you can host your website on any of those data centers as you are from Russia.

Quality of the Data Centers of SiteGround:

Fortunately, SiteGround upgrades the hardware of their data centers on a regular basis. On the latest update, they added SSD (Solid State Drive) on all of their data centers.

Whilst other popular hosting providers charge extra money for SSD hosting. But, with SiteGround you can get SSD hosting on all of their plans without any additional fees.

If you use an SSD hosting instead of HDD (Hard Disk Drive) then the loading speed of your site can be increased by 20 times. So, it is crystal clear that you should go with SSD hosting.

Another great thing about SiteGround is their power sources on the data centers. They use multiple power feeds for each of the data centers. So, if one fails others will serve the data centers.

Besides that, SiteGround has their own generators and UPS as the backup power sources. That makes sure that you will face little to none downtime on your websites if you use SiteGround.

Experiment 1: Website Speed Test:

First of all, we will test the speed of a website hosted on SiteGround. We will conduct this experiment on ReveiwPlan.com. As you might already know that we use SiteGround. But, our website is hosted in the Chicago, US data center. Now, let’s learn more about this test process.

How does the speed test work?

If you don’t know it yet, you can use ‘Pingdom’; a popular website which can be used to monitor the loading speed of any website. They have 4 servers from where we can perform the test. Among them, two of these serves are on the USA and the other two are on Stockholm (Sweden) and Melbourne (Australia) respectively.

You know that it is better if the distance between the data center and the visitor is less. So, we will use the Stockholm (Sweden) server to conduct this test. Because it is the only closest server to our Russian readers. So that you will be able to judge the performance of SiteGround more accurately.

What to expect from the test result?

After the test is conducted, we will receive the results which will be data like Load Time, Performance Grade, Page size, Number of requests and the location from where the test was performed. Not all of these data are important for us.

The most significant data for us would be the ‘Load Time’. And, all of the other data will be related to it. You need to remember that the lower the ‘Load Time’ the better. It’s better if the ‘Load Time’ is under 2 seconds. Let’s run the test.

Running the Experiment 1:

The test is running from Stockholm, Sweden:

Test Result from Stockholm, Sweden:

Here is the result:

Test Result from Stockholm, Sweden
Test Result from Stockholm, Sweden

Performance Grade:

We scored an ‘A’ on this test. Plus, out of 100, we scored 90.

Load Time:

Now, let’s look at the most important data here. Our website took only 685 ms to load. That means it is way less than the 2 seconds threshold. It’s actually astonishing. Literally, the ‘Load Time’ is like only half a second.

On top of that, we can see that this website is faster than 94% of the tested websites on Pingdom.

This actually shows how good the performance of SiteGround is.

Experiment 2: Server Speed Checker:

The next test will be a server speed check. In this test, we are going to use Bitcatcha – another popular website to test your web host server’s ping. Let’s know more about this test.

How does this ‘Server Speed Check’ test work?

Server Speed Check
Server Speed Check

Bitcatcha has 8 servers around the world. When we will start the test, the server where our website is hosted will be pinged from those 8 servers. Then these servers will get their response from our server within seconds. In this test, we will again use ReviewPlan.com.

What to expect from the result?

Although there are 8 servers of Bitcatcha. Not all of the results are important for our Russian readers. The most important servers on the list are the London, UK server. As London is closer than the other ones to our Russian readers. So, you will have to check the ‘Response Time’ from the London server on the result.

What is a good Server response time?

The short answer is the lower the better. However, if you want a more accurate one then Google has one for us. Google tells us that it is good if your website has a ‘Response Time’ of 200 ms or lower. So, our target would be that too. Let’s take a look at the result.

The Test Result:

Here you can see our result:

Server Speed Check Result
Server Speed Check Result

Performance Grade:

In this test, the highest grade is ‘A+’. And, you can see that we have achieved the best grade.

Response time from London, UK:

So, we notice that the ‘Response Time’ from London is only 10 ms. You can also see the results of the other locations. Those are also very good. Only the response time from Bangalore, India is 308 ms. That will not affect anyone of you if you are from Russia.

It is clear that SiteGround has very fast servers. Although our website is hosted in Chicago, US, we are getting great response time even from London. If you compare it with the recommendation from Google (200 ms), SiteGround is ahead of the curve for the users from Russia with only 10 ms response time.

If we assess the other results, we can see that US (W) and US (E) have 9 ms and 27 ms respectively. Then we see that Singapore, Sao Paulo, and Sydney has 72 ms, 109 ms, and 189 ms respectively. And the best response time was from Japan which is only 3 ms. These results will help you if you receive visitors from all over the world on your website.

Experiment 3: Ping Test:

Now, we will perform the last test. It will be a ‘Ping Test’. We will again use ReviewPlan.com as the test subject. And, the ‘Ping Tool’ from ‘Keycdn’ will be used to conduct this test.

How does the ping test work?

This is a very comprehensive test. Here, we will be able to test the servers of SiteGround from 16 different locations from all around the world. ‘Keycdn’ allows you to test the ‘Ping Time’ from 16 of their servers.

When the test will start, all of the 16 servers will send packets of data to the server of our website (that would be the SiteGround server). Then in return, all of those 16 servers will receive the response from the server of ReveiwPlan.com. The duration that takes to travel the data back and forth is known as ‘Ping Time’.

What to expect from the result?

Our aim will be to get a lower ‘Ping Time’. The lower the better. There is no standard ‘Ping Time. However, if it is lower than 300 ms, it is great.

Also, as there will be 16 results, not all of them are important to us. The only important ones are from these 4 locations – Frankfurt (Germany), London (UK), Paris (France) and Amsterdam (Netherlands) respectively. Because they are from the European continent and closer to Russia.

Along with Ping Time, we will also be able to get the ‘Packet Loss’ stats. It is better if the packet loss is lower.

So, let’s see how our website performs.

Running the 3rd Test:

The test is running on RevewPlan.com.

The Ping Test

The Test Result:

Here is the result:

The Ping Test Result
The Ping Test Result

You can see the result has arrived. Here, the average ‘Ping Time’ from Frankfurt (Germany), London (UK), Paris (France) and Amsterdam (Netherlands) is 3.635 ms, 2.172 ms, 9.881 ms and 6.677 ms respectively. And the packet loss is 0%.

That is an amazing result. And, it is another testimony of the performance of SiteGround servers.

The takeaways from the experiments:

On each of the testes, SiteGround performed very well. It is not fair to say that they just did ‘well’. Because the test subject was our website which is hosted in Chicago, US.  That is far away from Russia or Europe. On the other hand, we have taken the tests mostly from European servers. That actually gave us comparatively bad results as the distance between the data center and the test location is a lot.

So, if you host your site on any of the European servers of SiteGround, then it is guaranteed that you will get far better results than us. It clearly implies that SiteGround is the best option for our readers from Russia.

Now, there’s a possibility that you might not get visitors from within your country. Rather, the visitors may come from various locations around the world. Then what can you do to provide your visitors with a great browsing experience? There is a very good answer to that. You can use CDN. Let’s talk more about this below.

What more you can do to increase the speed of your website?

It is possible to receive visitors to your site from different parts of the world. In that case, you are stuck as you can’t host your site closer to all of the visitors at once. That actually makes things complicated. Because most of the visitors will get slow browsing speed on your website. As they come in randomly from random locations.

Luckily, there’s a way around that. You can use a CDN (Content Delivery Network) service. If you are not aware of CDN. Then let’s introduce you to it.

A CDN is a network of servers or data centers owned by a company. And those data centers are located throughout the globe. If you use the service then your website will be cached and stored on all of those servers at once.

So, whenever a visitor visits a site, the content will be delivered to him/her from the nearest server to him/her. That way, the distance between the visitor and the data center will decrease. In doing so, the loading speed of a site will increase.

Here’s a little secret, we use Sucuri CDN on ReviewPlan.com. It helps us to serve our visitors from all around the world smoothly.

Sucuri CDN:

To take back up of your website simply, you can use ‘Sucuri Backup’. It has some awesome features. For instance, once you set it up, it will take automatic backup in a scheduled manner. So, you won’t have to worry about backup anymore.
